The Old Man and the Sea is not a novel to teach people how to achieve soul harmony, but a kind of exploration and pursuit. The old man hopes to surpass his own value with his fishing and hunting experience at sea. "A man can be destroyed, but not defeated" -- this is undoubtedly Hemingway's values -- the life of the big marlin killed is the victim of the old man, the big fish and the old man are the victim of the shark, and the shark will eventually become the victim of nature. It is a reflection of Hemingway's stubborn pessimism complex. If life means a sacrifice, there is nothing human can do about it. However, Hemingway was also very sensitive and self-respecting, and he insisted on making the old man's actions meaningful. Although the old man's efforts became a victim of nature, the old man's spirit prevailed, and his spiritual power exceeded the past life at sea and the material outcome. In this aspect, the old man has realized the harmony of his soul and is no longer depressed.
