That must be a really tough time. With the rapid development of the western countries, many Chinese people started to suspect our own culture or blindly followed that of other countries’, which deeply hurt the status of the Chinese traditional culture. Not only did our Chinese people show no confidence in ourselves, but also many foreigners arrogantly looked down upon our culture as well. At this urgent time, a well-educated intellectual stood out, bravely appealed to all the benighted citizens that Chinese traditional culture is definitely invaluable. The name of the brave warrior, which undoubtedly must be engraved on our minds, is Gu Hongming.
Gu is an interesting genius. He has a thorough knowledge of both western and traditional Chinese culture. From my point of view, the influence of his endeavor to enable more people to understand Chinese culture is far more profound than his pessimistic contradiction of the new culture. If you use the vision of a modern citizen to scan this book, you will only find a stubborn senior crazily saying something which is not adapted by nearly all the people nowadays. However, when you stand in that dark period which Gu used to live in, and put yourself into his shoes, you will discover an intellectual who firmly stuck to the Chinese traditional culture under the trend of learning from the west.
There is no denying that in order to let western people know more about Chinese culture, Gu only focused on the good sides of the phenomena which he mentioned in his book and ignored the bad effects such as the way old Chinese men treating their wives and so on, but his eagerness to introduce Chinese culture to the world also cannot be missed. In his articles, the logic is so rigorous that it makes me to introspect whether I have the spirits and the virtue Gu emphasizes in his articles.
When it comes to the language, Gu pointed out that a language shows the spirits and the character of a nation, so Chinese is a language which reflects the hearts of Chinese people, poetic and full of affection. When it comes to Chinese women, Gu praised their selflessness and the courage to sacrifice. When it comes to Chinese men, Gu compliment their loyalty to their monarch and their country……
After deeply analyzing the spirits of the Chinese people and comparing them with western people, Gu came to a conclusion that a traditional Chinese person is a man who use his child-like soul to live a logic life as an adult. The spirits of the Chinese people is a mixture of their soul and mindsets, an intellect which is full of imagination, a mentality which is calm and peaceful, a spirit which will maintain youth forever. Nowadays, let us discard the dross and select the essence of this book, understand the inner spirits of a true Chinese person and improve the confidence of being a Chinese.
