山有木兮木有枝

中国人的精神读后感E28 6

山有木兮木有枝

When it comes to The Spirit of the Chinese People, first of all, suddenly I am struck with the idea that one of its functions is to give the reader an insight into the Chinese mind. What’s more, the main leitmotiv is to reveal Chinese spirit life, and then elaborate the eternal value of Chinese traditional culture.

Rationally speaking, I can’t deny that some of his standpoints are right and philosophical. As Alexander Pope said, “Fools rush in where angels fear to tread”. Although, Gu Hongming is a pedant, he has exposed some truths. For example, he pointed out originally that “to understand the real Chinese and Chinese civilization, the person must be deep, broad and simple”, besides delicacy. In all ages, too many foreigners deserve the viewpoint that Chinese is hard to master. Nevertheless, Gu Hongming conveys his opinion that Chinese is difficult to learn because it is a language that expresses deep feelings in simple sentences. Chinese is a language of soul, a language of poetry.

Furthermore, emotionally speaking, as a femininity, I can’t approve of his viewpoints completely. He is a pedant, who praises many traditional Chinese cultures almost unreservedly. He is not clear what is the essence and what is the dregs. It can be seen from his approval of footbinding and polygamy.

Admittedly, there are many biases in Gu Hongming’s view. But this is a noble bias. In my opinion, no one can discuss problems from the viewpoint of all human beings. When a great theorist is discussing his theory, he may not be onesided. As Bagehot said,In order to clarify a principle, you have to exaggerate a lot of things and omit a lot of things, only one-sided can be profound. In conclusion, we can’t judge the work of a great writer of that era, as The Spirit of the Chinese People. But we are lucky enough to witness the role of a book in that era and realize the spirit and will conveyed by a patriotic writer. I have a firm belief that the book, The Spirit of the Chinese People, is worth reading and savoring.
