Honestly,I do not like Mr’Gu’s idea at all because all my understanding of Gu was from Wang xiaobo’s remarks(by the way,I’m his fan).According to these statements,Guhongming is stubborn,eccentric fogy,debating some of the inferiority of Chinese,and his idea annoyed me.
But now,after I spent a winter vacation reading Guhongming’s book THE SPIRIT OF CHINESE PEOPLE,my opinion has changed a bit. Although I still can’t agree with his views ,in a way,I gradually understood his feelings,his despair,his enthusiasm and his love of the ancient and vicissitude civilization.Since this book was written in a special era,the views in the book are inevitably extreme.So I said,the value of this book is not what Gu want to express,but why he expresses it.
Guhonming,born in Nanyang,Malaysia,Penang.He is a genius of forensics and linguistics.He is fluent in 9 languages including English,French,Latin,and German.He is the first Chinese in the master Western science, and Oriental Chinese studies.He translated three of the “four books”in China-”The Analects of Confucius”,”The Doctrine of the Mean”,and”The Great learning”,which was a huge achievement.Westerners once had such a saying,You can not look at the Three Palace Halls when you come to China,but you must look at Gu hongming.
The purpose of his wellknown book-THE SPIRIT OF CHINESE PEOPLE is to reveal the spiritual life of the Chinese and to elucidate the eternal value of Chinese traditional culture.In this book ,Gu hongming described the Chinese culture,Chinese personality,and Chinese characteristic in detail,and analyzed the philosophy of Chinese from a unique(but not necessarily correct and objective I think) perspective.He compares Chinese people with Americans,British,Germans and French people,pointing out that Chinese people have the four virtues of deep,broad,simple and delicacy,and advocate the use of traditional Chinese Confucianism to solve the existence of Western society problem and transform it.His claims are undoubtedly attractive to Western philosophers and politicians because the time Europe was immersed in the pain of the First world War,while the Western world was experiencing a crisis of faith.Politicians and scholar are eager to find the roots of this war and the road to redemption.A number of people are attracted by ancient oriental wisdom.
But I really doubt that Gu’s remarks are biased.AS Wang Xiaobo said,not only the desire for power can make people go astray,but the moral superiority can also lead to the same result.He even wrote an essay to ridicule Gu hongming,but the article was also too radical,and I will not discuss it here.Considering,I think that Gu Hongming’s statement is one side of the word.The best example is that Confucianism has been popular in China since the Han Dynasty for thousands of years;but has become a tool for the rulers to brainwash;Gu hongming said that the Western rulers sued the religion to control the mob;he didn’t see the rulers of China using morality to create mobs.It’s ridiculous.Also,another controversial view of Gu Hongming is his interpretation of Chinese woman.He advocates woman’s foot-binding,saying that man should be married and married.This kind of materialized woman’s argument is really disgusting.
However,there are so many absurdities in Gu hongming’s thoughts;why should I say that his book is valuable?
The reason is that this book was born in the turbulent era,the age of China’s domestic and foreign troubles is uncertain,so its absurdity has been given meaning.
Since the late Qing Dynasty,the image of China has been seriously distorted;the Chinese are considered to be lower nationals,and Chinese culture is considered to be backward culture.Even some shameless Chinese literati are smashing Chinese civilization to cater to the western powers.The western mainstream media’s understanding of China is close to nothing.At this time,a person needs to stand up and reveal the true face of China to the world and promote Chinese culture to the whole world.Gu Hongming stood up and introduce the Chinese and Chinese culture to the world in an almost extreme attitude.
He loves Chinese people so deeply.He loves their strengths;he loves their shortcoming;he even argues for their inferiority.
So I said,the value of this book is not what it says,but why it is said and when it is said--it is a window to let the world know about this ancient country;it is a shield that protects this ancient civilization in turmoil.
