《THE SPIRIT OF THE CHINESE PEOPLE》 Book Review
"To understand the real Chinese and Chinese civilization, you must have deep feelings, broad minds and simple thoughts, because the three characteristics of Chinese character and Chinese civilization are: deep, broad and simple." This is a sentence written by Gu Hongming in the Chinese spirit .In 1915, Mr Gu Hongming published the book The Spirit Of The Chinese People in China, originally named "Spring and Autumn Dayi". The main purpose of this book is to expound the spirit of the Chinese people to the West, to show the cultural value of the Chinese people, and to try to change the image of the Chinese people in the eyes of the Westerners. It is said that this book has caused considerable sensation in the Western world, and has been translated into many languages and spread widely.
After reading Gu Hongming's The Spirit of the Chinese People, it was found that his patriotism was pure patriotism without any impurities, which covered his grotesque feudalism, his conservatism and his pedantic. He was probably the most amazing scholar in that era. Gu Hongming had 13 PhD degrees in his life. He was educated in the West for many years. He should have a Western mind. However, the image he left behind for his descendants is absolutely "Chinese" style. However, his Spirit of the Chinese is to reveal the spiritual life of the Chinese people, promote the value of Chinese traditional culture, and advocate the theory of saving the West by Confucian civilization. In this book, he also talks about democracy, Chinese language, war and so on, although we now seem to have limitations, but his sharp pen and unique insights still make you feel admired. Of course, the whole article does not mean that all of them agree with him, but his intention to write this book to safeguard China's innocence can be seen, which is already worthy of our admiration.
Nowadays, although China has a group of defenders of traditional culture, it seems so pale and powerless in front of the increasingly westernized masses. Therefore, some people always think that the Western moon is more round than the Chinese moon, thus forgetting the fundamentals. From the perspective of our contemporaries, we must inherit and develop the excellent culture of our own nation, and learn from the advanced culture and technology of other nations. We must not have the national arrogance mentality, so that our national culture can continue to develop and flourish in the process of blending with the excellent culture of other nations for the benefit of our Chinese nation.
Learning Mr. Gu Lao's classics not only deepens my understanding of the connotation of national spirit, but also strengthens my pride and confidence in the motherland's culture. As he said in his book, "Chinese spirit is the perfect combination of soul and thinking. The tranquil and peaceful mentality enables Chinese people to see through the essence of things. That is imaginative reason. The Chinese spirit is one. The spirit of perpetual youth is the immortal spirit of a nation. The immortal secret is the perfect harmony of Chinese mind and reason.
