Moral Obligation and Oder——Reading the Spirit of Chinese
In winter vacation,I have spent some time reading the book named the spirit of Chinese.Although it is a bit difficult for me,I try my beast to understand and absorb it. The book that is written by Gu Hongming is mainly about the difference between Chinese traditional culture and European culture.
As a translator,Gu Hongming was a genius that he had a good command of nine languages such as French、German、Latin and so on.What’s more,he had received thirteen doctorates.Simultaneously,he was keen to spread the culture and spirit of the east to the occidental so that it had a magnificent impact ,which is the reason why westerners had been said:When a westerner arrived in China without looking at three great hall, however, he must pay a visit to Gu Hongming. This shows the influence of Mr. Gu.
The spirit of Chinese written by him is praised by many people. They regarded the book as a classic and a masterpiece with magnificent influence. The book was published in the late Qing Dynasty, when Chinese spiritual were distorted most seriously. After its publication, the book changed the views and ideas of some Westerners towards the Chinese spirit and culture, and was praised by many literary giants. The book shows Mr. Gu’s love for Chinese traditional culture and Chinese spirit. At the present time, there is a lot of content in the book we have been passing on, because those spiritual and cultural can make us go higher and further, but I don’t agree with some ideas in this book.Gu Hongming thought that the moral justice possessed by the Chinese made war unnecessary in China, and that keeping order only requires moral power in people’heart. He called this moral power a good civic religion. This religion emphasizes loyalty, absolute loyalty. And people believe in fairness and justice, which is something I can’t agree with.First, man is a kind of animals. As animals, their natures are to do whatever it can do to keep themselves alive, even if it violates the interests of others, and there can be no absolute loyalty. Although many people gave their lives for their faith during the Anti-Japanese War, The reason why they gave their lives is that the goals of the Communist Party were similar to their ideas and interests, and those who believed in the three people’s principles were gradually betraying their faith. Because this doctrine is not in line with their interests, therefore, there is no absolute loyalty. Moreover, the good citizen also stressed that citizens should believe in fairness and justice. This condition is even more difficult to meet. Because society is unfair. If it is fair, why there is ovarian lottery theory. Even the fairest laws are in the interest of the majority. For example, if a person kills other person, either intentionally or negligently, according to the absolute principle of fairness and justice, the life of a prisoner should belong to the victim, one life for another. The prisoner could not be evaded or avoided in any capacity. And we often do not directly killing him because of humanitarianism. And in my opinion, humanitarianism is in the interest of most people, if most people will commit the same crimes. So fairness is relative. Therefore, only relying on moral obligation to maintain order inevitably has some emptiness and idealism.
Although it is difficult for me to read the book, I try to understand it. With the a few ideas in the book I cannot agree with, the rest of the book is well-deserved to reading and learning.
