Before I read this book,just only by seeing the title I thought it was a boring book that just contains a lot of uninteresting theories and tells us the things that everyone knows.But after reading it patiently I feel the truly inner fullness.By using his plentiful affection,overall social humanistic knowledge and rich professional expertise,the writer tells foreigners and us much more things about China in English.The content in this book is not limited to the spirit of Chinese people,it also has the articles about the Chinese woman,the Chinese language and some special opinions to the western countries.The writer compares the social environment,cultur and history to share us his thoughts about all the things.From the whole book I not only learn deeper about modern China but also get more information about the western countries at that time.The richness of the content in this book is beyond my imagination and the different understandings of this book are also surprised me.

According to all the topics the writer has talked I will choose two of them to share my opinion.The first topic is named the spirit of the Chinese people.This is the whole book’s title and the chapter’s title also with the most words in the book.The writer uses many examples to show us the spirit of the Chinese is constitutionally distinctive in the mind,temper and sentiment of the Chinese people,which distinguishes them from all other people.The writer praises the spirit of the Chinese people,he says that the spirit of the Chinese people is a happy union of soul with intellect and he thinks it is a state of mind that in short,a mood or in the words of the poet,a serene and blessed mood.He cites a lot of Confucius’s saying and also uses the comparison between the influence of Confucius and the influence of the western region.By explaining the spirit of Chinese people he also introduces many thing about Confucius.He evaluates the Confucius that the greatest service Confucius has done for the Chinese people is in giving them this state religion in which he taught the absolute duty of loyalty to the emperor.He is objective that he admits Chinese people is want of exactness.He can find the goodness of Chinese and also cite examples to prove that Chinese people also have shortcomings.He is different from some radical people who absolutely approve or disapprove with Chinese,he uses his own rational thinking to objectively evaluate the argument.He is the person that truly want the whole world know know more about China.

The second topic is about the Chinese woman.The writer lives in a different time from today so I understand that many of the knowledge and thoughts he gets are different from now we get.As a young woman I can’t accept polygamy,although the writer says it is a way to express the wife’s deepest love to her husband.By writing the concubinage in ancient times and ancient customs of marriage,the writer seems to affirm the importance of woman in society,although from now some of the author’s comments are out of date,he clearly states his understanding of Chinese woman openly and comprehensively at that time.For the womanhood in a nation is the flower of the civilization of the state of civilization.

That days only few people have the determination to let foreigners know more about China because of the locked social environment.There are fewer people like the writer who has the ability to know how to talk about it.By using English it is perfect to let people know what the people that days is thinking about.He uses a lot of western world’s examples to let them know clearly about China,at the meantime from these examples,we know them better too.

I will cite the writer’s sentence to conclude,it is also my favorite one in this book.Now if the spirit of perpetual youth,the spirit of national immortality,the secret of the immortality is this happy union of soul with intellect.
