Recently, I was lucky to read Gu Hongming's the Spirit of the Chinese, and I felt that I had benefited a lot after reading it. The book was written during the first World War at the beginning of the last century, just as European civilization was in crisis, and Gu Hongming's purpose was obvious, pointing out a way out for a troubled Europe, and even the entire world civilization. The aim is to try to explain the spirit of Chinese civilization and to reveal its value. That is, the Chinese civilization under the tradition of Confucianism.

In this book, Gu Hongming believes that in order to evaluate a civilization, it must be seen what kind of people can be produced, what kind of men and women. He criticized missionaries and Sinologists who were called authorities in the study of Chinese civilization for actually not really understanding the Chinese and the Chinese language. He pointed out uniquely:to understand the true Chinese people and Chinese civilization, that person must be deep, broad and simple because the character of the Chinese people and the three major characteristics of Chinese civilization are precisely deep, broad and simple.’ In addition, there is a ‘sensitive’.

I remember that when Mr. Qian Xuesen had been living abroad, he had made an oath : ‘China is my forever home’.  Thats the the spirit of the Chinese of an overseas barefoot. I think that as a Chinese, no matter where you are, as long as you are in China at all. You always want to go back to your mother's arms, so that you can get back to the root.

The real Chinese: he's a life with an adult reason but a child's heart. That is, the real Chinese have the mind of the adult and the heart of the child. Therefore, the spirit of China is the spirit of the eternal youth, which is the spirit of the immortality of the people. What's the immortality secret? Unspeakable elegance: a combination of good and understanding. Shining is the law of love? The law of love is to love your parents. Shrine is the law of justice? The law of justice is true, trustworthy, loyal, and the supreme duty of a good citizen is the duty of loyalty, not only the loyalty of the act, but also the spiritual integrity. Now in China, there is no need for natural power to protect itself, justice and controversy are more powerful than natural forces, and the moral obligation is something that must be obeyed. To understand the true Chinese and Chinese civilization, you must have three features: erudite, profound and honest.

But the spirit of the book has its drawbacks. The description and evaluation of women in this book still retains the feudal color of ancient poetry and is not applied to modern women. So for the spirit of this book, we should be more to take the essence and to discard the dregs.

Today's China, despite a group of defenders of traditional culture, is so powerless in the face of an increasingly westernized public. So some people will always feel that the Western moon is more rounded than China, and thus forget the root. From the perspective of our contemporary generation, we must inherit and carry forward the excellent culture of our own nation, learn and learn from the advanced culture of other nationalities, science and technology, and must not have that kind of national arrogance mentality. In this way, our national culture can continue to carry forward and benefit our Chinese nation in the integration of other nationalities' excellent culture.

I think these are the spirit of the Chinese, the spirit of the children of Hua Xia. However, Gu Hongming also said that the Chinese spirit is more and more, and the most beautiful thing in the Chinese is that, as a nation with a long history, it has both the wisdom of the adult and the life of a child-like life. I hope that this spirit can be used in time to keep the Chinese from generation to generation.
