my book review
Since the late Qing Dynasty, the image of China has been seriously distorted. Gu Hongming, an "old monster" who has a good command of Chinese and Western culture, published Chinese Spirit in English in 1915. He used his pen to safeguard the dignity of Chinese culture and change the prejudice of some Westerners towards China.
Reading this masterpiece of the old gentleman has benefited a lot.
Mr. Gu Hongming's "The Spirit of the Chinese People" describes the Chinese people of that era. In fact, it mainly describes the personality characteristics of the intellectuals. Although it is not as colorful as some people, it is undoubtedly accurate and vivid. Although it is full of humorous jokes, it also contains many serious topics. The book is imbued with Gu Hongming's love for China and the Chinese people.
In the book The Spirit of the Chinese, the author compares the Chinese with the Americans, the British, the Germans and the French, and highlights the characteristics of the Chinese: the Americans are broad and simple, but not deep; the British are deep and simple, but not broad; the Germans are broad, deep and not simple; the French are not as deep as the Germans, but not as deep as the Americans. The broad-minded and the simple-minded British have the sensitivities that the three nationalities lack; only the Chinese have all these four excellent spiritual characteristics.
We should learn from the spirit advocated by the author and really build up the spirit of our Chinese people!
