  Because Laurie's father married an Italian,but Laurie's grandfather didn't like her,and Mr.Laurie never saw his son after he married,so Laurie' skill of playing the.piano remind Mr.Laurie of the woman he didn't like.

I think the old man was afraid of losing him, so he was very careful. Laurie, like his mother, was by nature a lover. I dare say his father is afraid of the idea of him becoming a musician.
