Necklace
Shirleen
Necklace is a short story written by French writer maupassant in 1884.This story tells that Mathilde, the wife of a young civil servant, borrowed a diamond necklace from her friend to show off her beauty for a party. Unexpectedly, the necklace accidentally lost on the way home. As the necklace could not be found, she had to borrow money to buy the new necklace and return it to her friend. To pay off her debts, she moved into a dilapidated house and quit her servants. It took her ten years of hard work to pay off her debts. In the end, however, she learned that the necklace she had borrowed was a fake diamond necklace.
This story satirizes the social atmosphere of vanity and comparison at that time. Mathilde paid a high price for her vanity, but at the same time it soothed her. In my opinion, we should learn to be content with what we have. We should not blindly compare ourselves with others driven by vanity, which will only lead to more loss than gain.
