San Francisco, Sep. 29 -- Alpaca farms across the United States opened their doors to visitors for them to learn about alpacas on the National Alpaca Farm Days this weekend.

One worker at the Rockstar Alpacas farm in the Monterey Bay area along the scenic California central coast said that more than 200 visitors came and learned about the alpacas during the open day on Sept. 28.

Since ancient times, the South American Andes Mountains have been the ancestral home to the alpaca. Their fleece, referred to as "Fiber of the Gods", is softer than cashmere and warmer than wool. The fleece is turned into the most luxurious garments in the world. In 1984, a small group of importers brought the first of a carefully selected herd of highest quality alpacas into the United States and Canada, and they immediately became a beloved part of the North American landscape. But Peru, Bolivia, and Chile are still home to the largest percentage of alpacas in the world. The cute-looking animal has also become an Internet culture phenomenon in China and gained great attention in the country.
