The Pilgrims of Canterbury
Miya
Hawthorne's
short story, The Pilgrims of Canterbury, tells the story of a couple
who are about to leave the village and start a new life when they meet
several pilgrims who have come to make a pilgrimage and are frustrated
with their old life. The poet's story represents the pursuit of honor,
the businessman's story represents the pursuit of interest, while the
middle-aged couple's story represents the pursuit of a happy marriage.
The three stories reflect the various disappointments in earthly life,
which are both ironic and thought-provoking. At the end of the story,
the two young men and women, not discouraged, still decided to bravely
join the unknown life.
