The creative process
In the fall of 1899, at the urging of his friend Arthur Henry, Dreiser began writing Sister Carrie.
The material of the novel mainly comes from his knowledge and accumulation of urban life when he worked as a journalist for a long time, as well as his own experience of living in Chicago and New York and his inspiration from reading a lot of works of Balzac, Hardy, Spencer and others.
His childhood life experience and family members' suffering process are also one of the main sources of his creation.
In the most important episode of Sister Carrie, Hurstwood stole money from the hotel and lured Carrie onto the train to begin her elopement life.
The plot is actually based on the life of Dreiser's sister Emma.
A cashier stole $3,500 from a hotel and eloped with Emma to Montreal and then on to New York.
Dreiser completed the first draft of Sister Carrie in March 1900.
