  Confucius (551-479 BC ), whose first name was Qiu and styled Zhong Ni , was born at Zouyi , Lu ( southeast of Qufu City , Shandong Province ) in the late Spring and Autumn period . He was a famous thinker , educator and founder of Confucian school in ancient China . According to legend , Confucius had 3,000 disciples , including 72 virtuous disciples , who once led his disciples around the world . Confucius was also a collator of ancient documents . He had edited poems and books , set Rites and Music , foretold the Changes of Zhou , and made the Spring and Autumn Annals . Confucius ' thought and doctrine have exerted profound influence on later generations .
