All in all, School and Society is a very valuable book, which makes me rethink the purpose and value of schooling. I believe that in the future education work, I will pay more attention to the cultivation of children's practical ability and interest, so that they can learn and grow in practice. At the same time, I will pay more attention to the development and changes of society, and timely adjust the content and methods of education to make education more in line with the needs of society.

Reading "School and Society" has been a profoundly enriching experience. The book offered insights into the relationship between the institution of schooling and the larger society, ideas that have left me rethinking the purpose and value of education. Foremost, the text underscores the role of schools beyond mere academic instruction. It is a place where children not only acquire knowledge but also develop as individuals, providing them with real-world experiences that complement their classroom learning. By integrating practical elements into the educational curriculum, schools can better prepare children for the complexities of society.

Educational theory is based on various disciplines, such as psychology, sociology, philosophy, and neuroscience, that inform our understanding of human learning and development. Educational theory is influenced by the historical, cultural, and social context of education, as well as the values and goals of educators and learners. Educational theory is often categorized into three major paradigms: behaviorism, cognitivism, and constructivism, each with its own assumptions, principles, and methods of teaching and learning¹. Educational theory is dynamic and evolving, as new research, evidence, and perspectives emerge and challenge existing theories or propose new ones.

Play is not to be identified with anything which the child externally does. It rather designates his mental attitude in its entirety and in its unity. It is the free play, the interplay, of all the child’s powers, thoughts, and physical movements, in embodying, in a satisfying form, his own images and interests. Negatively, it is freedom from economic pressure—the necessities of getting a living and supporting others—and from the fixed responsibilities attaching to the special callings of the adult. Positively, it means that the supreme end of the child is fulness of growth—fulness of realization of his budding powers, a realization which continually carries him on from one plane to another.

My most unforgettable experience was my first skydiving. As I stood at the entrance of the plane, watching the ground getting closer and closer below, I felt both excited and nervous. But when I jumped down, I felt free and amazed. In the air, I saw the beautiful scenery below and felt like a bird flying. Although it was only a few minutes of experience, it was unforgettable and allowed me to try many new things.I returned to the sofa like I had a nightmare. Terrifying scenes kept popping up in my mind, imagining a dead body lying under my feet and a pile of skeletons sitting next to me. The more I think about it, the more scared I become. I curl myself up into a ball, and my mind is still constantly wandering with thoughts

The aim of historical instruction is to help students understand and appreciate the values of social life, the forces and forms of social change, and the development of human civilization. Historical instruction can also foster curiosity, critical thinking, and historical imagination in students, as well as equip them with skills such as weighing evidence and asking perceptive questions. History is not just a record of the past, but a dynamic and living subject that can inspire and inform the present and the future.

There are different perspectives on the role and value of practical work in science education. Some argue that practical work is essential for developing students' scientific skills, understanding, and interest, as well as for preparing them for future careers in science and technology³⁵. Others contend that practical work is often ineffective, inefficient, and expensive, and that it does not necessarily lead to better learning outcomes or attitudes . According to a review by Abrahams and Millar, practical work can be classified into four types, based on the intended learning outcomes: - **Enquiry** - to develop students' ability to plan and conduct investigations, collect and analyse data, and draw conclusions. - **Illustration** - to demonstrate or visualise a scientific phenomenon, concept, or principle. - **Enhancement** - to increase students' interest, motivation, or enjoyment of science. - **Interaction** - to provide opportunities for students to work together, communicate, and share ideas. Each type of practical work may have different advantages and disadvantages, depending on the context, the quality of implementation, and the assessment of learning. Therefore, it is important for teachers to be clear about the purpose and goals of each practical activity, and to design and evaluate them accordingly . Some of the challenges and limitations of practical work include: - The lack of alignment between the intended and the actual learning outcomes, due to factors such as insufficient guidance, unclear instructions, or inadequate feedback . - The difficulty of measuring the impact of practical work on students' conceptual understanding, skills, and attitudes, due to the complexity and variability of the learning process and the outcomes . - The high cost and time required for preparing, conducting, and managing practical work, especially in large classes or with limited resources . - The potential safety and ethical issues involved in handling hazardous materials, living organisms, or human subjects . Some of the benefits and opportunities of practical work include: - The enhancement of students' engagement, curiosity, and enjoyment of science, by providing them with hands-on, authentic, and meaningful experiences³⁵. - The development of students' scientific inquiry skills, such as asking questions, designing experiments, collecting and analysing data, and drawing conclusions³⁵. - The improvement of students' conceptual understanding, by allowing them to observe, manipulate, and test scientific phenomena, concepts, and principles³⁵. - The promotion of students' collaboration, communication, and social skills, by encouraging them to work in groups, share ideas, and present their findings³⁵. - The preparation of students for future careers in science and technology, by exposing them to the methods, tools, and practices of scientific research and innovation³⁵. In conclusion, practical work in science education has both supporters and critics, and there is no simple answer to whether it is beneficial or not. The effectiveness and value of practical work depend on many factors, such as the type, quality, and purpose of the activity, the context and resources available, and the assessment and evaluation methods used.
