李晓娟《了不起的盖茨比》
About five years ago, the first time I read "the great Gatsby", reading the dream behind the nothingness and the love of the uneasy blow; once again, I sink down to return the book. I see the fate made a mockery of mockery. This book is Fitzgerald's life. Life is like a play, and drama is life.
This book is a first person narrative in Nick's perspective, and is very generous to give him a lot of space to talk about his father's advice, his life and work, he chatted with red wine at Daisy's house, and travel with Tom and his mistress to New York... Until the third chapter, Gatsby, the main corner, finally came out. The role of Nick, which seems useless, is the most important role in the book. He helps Gatsby and Daisy meet again, listen to Gatsby's obsession with Daisy, help guy to take care of him, and spit on his selfish Daisy and Tom. He looked at everything with sober eyes. He put himself in the business and left.
Gatsby is Fitzgerald himself, and Nick is also him. He is more sensible, more sober, and can see clearly. Instead of Fitzgerald, he was on the stage, surveying every scene in front of him, savoring everyone's lines, and seeing everyone's expression. He knows that after this stage, it is difficult to change the fate. Nick knew that Gatsby was not in love with daisy. It was the shadow of the light and bright villa, a new car and a yacht, a dance that never ended, the "sound of money" in her lost voice, and a poor boy who wanted to get rid of his ordinary birth and leap into the upper class society.
Gatsby had such ambition since he was a child. He made a strict schedule, practiced speeches and manners, decided not to smoke, read a book a week, and treat his parents well. When he grew up, he looked everywhere for money and became an officer. He became an excellent lieutenant, and then met Daisy, but could not catch her because of poverty. He returned to Oxford University for five months and returned with many useless medals, but Daisy had married Tom, who was born and sold. He knew that only money could stay in Daisy, so it took five years to build a dreamlike villa where Daisy's green light was visible, a banquet that never ended. At last he recalled Daisy's heart, but Tom was bitterly pointed out that he was only a private dealer. Daisy and Tom despised Gatsby who made desperate efforts to earn money, because his money was not inherited from the aristocracy. So they "ruined things, destroyed people, and returned to their own money pile".
Even if a young man struggled to accumulate enormous wealth, it would be difficult for him to change his humble origins. That was his original sin.
Countless people in Gatsby's party, did not forget to guess his identity and to ridicule. He was killed by Daisy and Tom on purpose, and nobody was interested in the funeral, but Nick said he was "great Gatsby". In fact, it was Fitzgerald who had predicted his own life, spelling everything to pursue an illusory light, knowing nothing in the dark, but always persuading himself, believing that the dream was in touch.
There is always a beautiful morning - so we struggle forward and head back to the past.
