Hold the dream, keep moving forward.
-after reading The Great Gatsby
Recently, I read a famous novel The Great Gatsby, which makes me very inspired. The book suggests me that I should hold my dream and keep moving forward no matter what happens.
By using a first-person narrative, the book tells us a story about Gatsby. When Gatsby was a poor soldier, he fell in love with a young upper-class lady called Daisy , but eventually, for the reason that they have a big status gap, Daisy married a rich but impertinent man and Gatsby left for the war. Determined to regain Daisy’s love, Gatsby struggled to gain both fame and wealth. When he came back, he started a new emotional relationship with Daisy. However, Daisy was empty and just regarded him as a paramour to find a feeling of excitement. When Gatsby became the scapegoat of Daisy in a homicide case, he was abandoned by Daisy relentlessly. In the end, he was alone and killed.
To some extent, the novel reflects hedonism and illusory prosperity of American society of the day. In my opinion, what leaves me the deepest impression in the novel is not the love story between Gatsby and Daisy, but his struggle process, which is simply mentioned. At the beginning of the book, we can see countless prosperous scenes implying how successful Gatsby was. In fact, all these luxuriant things were created by Gatsby to attract Daisy and the things are also the returns of Gatsby’s effort. We can imagine that, without the dream of having a happy and wealthy life with Daisy one day, Gatsby may not push himself so eagerly to move forward and get such an enviable achievement. Many years ago, Daisy gave in to the reality and gave their love up. There is no doubt that Gatsby had a very hard time to accept it. However, instead of drowning himself in sadness, he made it clear that their separation was caused by their difference in status and wealth. Eager to regain the love of Daisy, he spared on effort to make progress in his career. Thought he beautified Daisy in his heart and was betrayed by Daisy thoroughly in the end, his determination as well as effort for his dream deserve our admiration.
Nowadays, more and more young people who have their own dreams are not willing to exert themselves. As far as I am concerned, their complaints about difficulties of achieving their dreams are waste of time. What they should do is to make up their minds and step forward for their dreams like Gatsby. For example, Jack Ma, who is founder of Alibaba, has held his dream of creating a famous enterprise for many years and kept going to achieve his dream.
In our life, dream are what encourages us to step forward more energetically.We should always keep in mind that we are supposed to hold the dream and keep moving forward so that we can live up to our gumption.
