了不起的盖茨比 书评1
许奡聃
Generation by generation, Americans have been convinced that struggling can bring them better lives since 1776, the year in which America was born and Gatsby, of course, was no exception. In his early years, he was a poor solider fallen in love with a girl named Daisy. However, due to the outbreak of World War I, Daisy broke up with him and married Tom, a born-rich playboy. Firmly believed that it was money that resulted in Daisy’s betrayal, Gatsby made efforts to become rich and finally made it. Desperately desiring for her love, he settled in the east of Long Island, in the west of which lived Daisy’s family. Every day in his large house feasts were held, just in order to attract Daisy. However, rich as he was, he couldn’t become a member of the upper class, and Daisy was not the girl in his dream any more. The same is true of every American like him. From my perspective, Daisy can be seen as a symbol of American Dream, which is also beautiful but artificial and distant. Although some realized their dreams, they will find the reality cruel and shallow, just as Daisy was. Gatsby’s death is not only the end of his great life, but is also the shattering of American Dream.
