《中国人的精神》书评 决赛

牛玉洁

After reading The spirit of the Chinese people, i was deeply impressed by Gu Hongming. What is the spirit of the Chinese people? The writer gives us the best answer in this book. His some thoughts have inspired me a lot. Here are some instances.

Firstly, the writer thinks that if one want to understand the real Chinese people and the Chinese civilisation , a man must be deep, broad, simple and delicacy. He also compares Chinese people with German, American people ,English and French to prove his opinion. The American people is  difficult to understand the real Chinese people and the Chinese civilisation, because the American people, as a rule, are broad, simple, but not deep. The English are not broad. The Germans again cannot understand the real Chinese people and the Chinese civilisation because the Germans, especially the educated Germans, as a rule , are deep ,broad, but not simple. The French people can understand and has understood the real Chinese people and the Chinese civilisation best. The French, it is true, have not the depth of nature of the Germans nor the broadness of mind of the Americans nor the simplicity of mind of the English. But the French people are not a quality of mind viz--delicacy. It is necessary in order to understand the real Chinese people and the Chinese civilisation.

Secondly, the writer points out that the Chinese people remember things with heart and not with the head. The heart with its power of sympathy ,acting as glue, can retain things much better than the head or intellect which is hard and dry. And he thinks the language of China is a language of the soul. It is an obvious fact that for foreigners living in China, it is much easier for children and uneducated people to learn Chinese than for adults and educated people. The reason is that children and uneducated people learn Chinese with their hearts. On the contrary, educated people, especially rational modern Europeans, think and use language with their head and intellect.

The writer thinks the reason why the Chinese people do not feel the need of religion is because they have in Confucianism a system of philosophy and ethics, a synthesis of human society and civilisation which can take the place of religion.

Finally, he also thinks that the real Chines people is a man who lives the life of a man of a adult reason with the heart of a child. In short the real Chinese people is a person with the head of a grow up man and the heart of a child. The spirit of the Chinese people is a state of mind, a temper of the soul.It is a happy union of soul with intellect in the Chinese type of humanity, that serene and blessed mood which gives to the real Chinese people his inexpressible gentleness.

All in all, this book gives me a lot of inspiration, and i believe these views will also give me help in the future life.
