I have heard about this book for a long time. When I first heard the name of this book, I always played the role of Bill Gates. Then I kept thinking about the relationship between Bill Gates and gatsby. This curiosity eventually drove me to read the book.
Some people said THE GREAT GATSBY is a story about a sorrowful affection. It's right, but in obvious,it can't be a classical novel if it just write a love story. The classic of the novel is that the author reflects the American society at that time and those young people who pursue their dreams through the sadness of a veteran. The background of the book is the United States in the 1960s, which was then an extravagant society. At that time, most Americans were addicted to it, and only a few young people were still pursuing their dreams.
There were still some people who had dreams but had no determination.Like Daisy and Daisy's husband Tom; Have a dream but no determination, like Nick; Finally, there are those young people who pursue their dreams, just like gatsby in the book. However, Fitzgerald clearly realized that in the American society at that time, there were too few young people with dreams, and even fewer young people who could realize their dreams. This is exactly reflected in the tragic plot of gatsby in the book. Everyone in the book has a distinctive characteristics, arrogant, selfish richman, Tom; Cowardly, be long to money, Daisy; No independent, helpful, Nick; The pursuit of love, finally give up, the gatsby. Finally, Tom and Daisy left for Europe. Gatsby was shot by the husband of Tom's mistress who killed Daisy. Nick, as a bystander, deeply experienced the darkness and erosion of the American upper class. There is no such thing as a fairy tale. Good people don't get happy endings and bad people don't seem to get any punishment. However, this is the reality.
"Men and women shuttled back and forth like moths among laughter, champagne and stars", the author implied at the beginning of the book the situation of the American elite at that time, all people were like moths, where there was light, they flew to, with no direction and no purpose. And gatsby met Daisy in this way, which also confirmed Daisy's assumption: worship money. Gatsby's white suit, white car and white palace are all noble and pure white, which also confirms Nick's profound words: all the people I met are not as noble as gatsby.
At the end of the novel is the line, "we press on, boating against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the days of yore." This sentence is very poignant, which also covers the life of gatsby, which is the author's disappointment to the American society at that time.THE GREAT GATSBY is indeed a tragedy, and it is through this tragedy that the author wants to wake up the extravagant americans.
