some reflections on Hong ming Gu
与之
Gu Hongming is a legendary figure in modern Chinese history. After reading the book named The Spirit of the Chinese People, I have the privilege to approach some of the ideological essence of the great people. In the chapter "Chinese Spirit", he praised China for not relying on the rule of law, not on power, but relying on the moral sense in the hearts of citizens for self-restraint since ancient times. Although I can't completely agree with some of his statements, his sense of cultural identity and pride among the lines makes me boil with enthusiasm.
But when talking about "Chinese women", he clearly shows the pedantic and backward environment which he settled in.
He only regarded his wife as a "woman" in the moral degree, but regarded the concubines as playthings. As he was a master of Chinese and Western studies, nine foreign languages and 13 doctoral degrees, I can hardly understand that there is still such a recognization of wives and concubines in his mind.
In this way, Gu Hongming is known as a peculiar hero in the late Qing Dynasty, which matched with his behaviors.
