Chances

The Cop and the Anthem is a short irony story written by American writer O. Henry in 1906. It tells the story of a homeless man Soapy who has no enough food and fixed shelter. He wants to spend the winter in prison, so he tries to defy the law again and again, but the police ignore his crimes. Later, when he heard the anthem outside the church, he was so moved that he decided to be a man of himself. However, he was at that time arrested by the police and put in prison for being an unemployed vagrant.
From my perspective, on the one hand, this story thisshort story satirizes the stupidity and inaction of the police at that time; on the other hand, it tells us that we should seize the chance when God give it to us. If we don't hold the chance, like Soapy, we will never have it again.
