Gatsby’s love for Daisy

CountingSheep

Gatsby's love for Daisy has nothing to do with Daisy's noble personality and spiritual level. The crux of the matter is that Gatsby himself is an idealist, full of beautiful yearning for love, and he is willing to sacrifice himself for it. Daisy, on the other hand, inspires Gatsby's passion by her own existence. Gatsby is just like Narcissus. What he likes is a reflection, and he is deeply intoxicated by it. His love is more his own affair than the spiritual resonance between the two.

In a love, Gatsby is not a good example for us to learn.

Gatsby said something to Nick about Daisy: "her voice is full of the jingle of coins." Does Gatsby know that Daisy is greedy for material money, power and status? He knows better than anyone else. So many people ask why Gatsby saw through the woman who loved money but still loved her and didn't choose to leave her? For Daisy, there is no other reason why Daisy loves her more than he does. Even knowing that she didn't love him, Gatsby might still love her. Because Gatsby's love for Daisy, he never asked Daisy to be perfect, he allowed and contained her material.

To me, this story of a troubled wealthy young man is about the individual search for personal success and liberty. The trouble he faces comes when he is faced with a society that is filled with decadence and expectation of certain things from the upper class. To me, his constant obsession with the Green light represents both his yearning for Daisy, as well a general theme of wanting something that he cannot have; which holds true for both Daisy and the light. I think that Gatsby’s death at the end of the novel is meant to portray the futile nature of the pursuit the American Dream possesses. F. Scott Fitzgerald believed, due to his own personal experiences, that the American dream was a cruel mistress whom presented all peoples with opportunity, yet even with success made happiness constantly out of reach.
