余思涵The traditional Chinese color concept can be called the "five color concept", including red, yellow, green, white and black. These colors have also continued to this day. Now we describe them as "colorful", "colorful" and so on. We can see that black and white are the two poles of color from the "you" pole belongs to black and "no" pole belongs to white. The "you" pole and "no" pole lay a certain color foundation for ink painting. At the same time, the basic concept of folk art has also been formed in the five elements of color. For example, the use of facial makeup color in operas and the use of color in various local operas and exorcism masks have become a symbol of identity and quality. When Chinese painters use color, they are not limited to the color they see in their eyes, nor are they simply using color to express the external specific shape of objects, but use color to express their understanding of the objects they paint, taking color as one of the performance methods.

白学晶A white-and-black world, to Chinese people, is a colorless world without bright, gorgeous colors. Chinese painting basically attached great importance to color. A good example is that, in the early days, paintings were called "red and green color" in China. Chinese artists used to advocate "applying color to depict color" – given the diversely colorful world, it is the artist's responsibility to reproduce the world with variegated colors. Yet the ink-and-wash painting triumphed over this tradition to become superior to all other genres of traditional Chinese fine arts.

NGC. 1097Chinese people combine color with power, position and religious etiquette to form a unique philosophy of color. From architectural furniture to clothing and diet, we can have a glimpse of Chinese color concept. In the Zhou Dynasty in the 11th century or so, the Chinese people began to give special meaning to colors, dividing them into five positive colors: red, green, yellow, white, and black, as well as different intermediate colors made of these five positive colors according to different proportions.

李胜思雨Black-and-White World Apparently, the emergence and development of ink-and-wash painting is closely related to technology, materials and artistic traditions. Ink and wash is usually done on paper or silk, with paper being the main material. Chinese papermaking technology was highly developed, and different types of paper with fine textures and absorbent functions provided a solid foundation for the emergence of this painting genre. At the same time, the tradition of Chinese calligraphy exerted a direct influence on it. However, it was more the ideological factors – rather than the factors listed above – that were the main spur for its emergence and development.
