backgroud of Helen

余诗晴

Helen Burns in the book is based on Charlotte's eldest sister, Maria Bronte.

At the age of 8, Charlotte's sisters Maria and Elizabeth were sent to Cowenbridge Women's Boarding School to study. Among them, Maria Bronte, her eldest sister, is very intelligent, far beyond her actual age. But she was very unfortunate: she was weak, and she was obsessed with fantasy. After she was sent to Covenbridge School, she was punished repeatedly for being "untidy". Because of the harsh and hard school conditions, she contracted lung disease there and died.

Helen in the novel is a pious Christian. She seems to have a characteristic of obedience. She always suffers injustice in silence, which is the opposite of Jane Eyre's strong sense of resistance.

It is by Helen that the author expresses his criticism of social injustice at that time and his memory of his sister who has passed away.

Helen was pure at heart. She aspires to benevolence and hates sin; she is seeking a world of spirit, of the soul. In reality, however, she is helpless and hopeless. The characterisation of Helen is in stark contrast to that of Jane Eyre, who It was Helen who taught Jane Eyre patience and forbearance under the teachings of religion.

It is also Helen who gives Jane Eyre a new sense of the fear of ghosts and death, Jane Eyre is thinking: "I too seem to think she is right", Helen's thoughts impact on Jane Eyre, although Jane Eyre wonders at Helen's ideas, unable to understand either this creed of endurance or to approve of the tolerance Helen shows towards her punisher.
