A love story. The Great Gatsby explores themes such as corruption, idealism, unwillingness to change, social unrest, and indulgence, vividly depicting a cautionary portrait of the American Dream and the Roaring Jazz Age twelve.
The story tells of Nick, a bank clerk who left his hometown and came to New York. Gatsby's luxurious life and mysterious personal background sparked his curiosity. Gatsby came from a poor background but fell in love with the wealthy lady Daisy, and the outbreak of World War broke up the lovers. Gatsby returned from the battlefield with his achievements, but was waiting for the news that his beloved had married someone else. Feeling heartbroken, he resorted to all means to become a wealthy man, spending money like dirt and playing the flute all night to catch Daisy's attention and salvage his lost love.
Nick was moved by Gatsby's infatuation and played a matchmaker for the two, but little did he know that Daisy was no longer the same as before, but had a materialistic face. Reviewing Gatsby's old dreams was just the excitement she sought outside of marriage. In an accident, Daisy hit and killed her husband Tom's lover Mrs. Wilson while driving. Gatsby decided to take responsibility for saving his beloved, but Tom used this to instigate Wilson to kill Gatsby. Desperate Daisy did not bury Gatsby, but instead embarked on a journey to Europe with her husband.
Gatsby hastily ended his absurd and tragic life, while Nick, who witnessed the world's fickleness and injustice, left the noisy, indifferent, empty, and hypocritical New York and returned to his hometown with a sense of melancholy.
