As you can see, the author lamented gatsby and the gradual loss of his golden age. The great gatsby is Fitzgerald's own dream story. He asked gatsby to pursue Daisy, Daisy is wealth, beauty, love, is the green light, that "year after year in front of our eyes gradually away from the gilded future", as well as the American dream itself, as long as you work hard, as long as you pursue as gatsby, you will eventually get all this. What's clearer than actually getting the hand is that it's a stable step, a formula that if we do that we're going to be successful. But Fitzgerald himself knew that this must be tragic. Fitzgerald was no longer so naive when it came to writing fiction. Deep inside, he must have known that he would eventually be destroyed like gatsby, and the novel was a perfect prophecy of his future. Even in the novel, gates himself may have realized, before he died, that all he was waiting for was an illusion, but he had to keep waiting.
