    • ONE WINTER a Farmer found a Snake stiff and frozen with cold. He had compassion on it, and taking it up, placed it in his bosom. The Snake was quickly revived by the warmth, and resuming its natural instincts, bit its benefactor, inflicting on him a mortal wound. "Oh," cried the Farmer with his last breath, "I am rightly served for pitying a scoundrel."

    • 《伊索寓言》相传为公元前六世纪古希腊人被释奴隶伊索所编,搜集有古希腊民间故事,并加入印度、阿拉伯及基督教故事,共三百五十余篇。《伊索寓言》的一系列故事,大都篇辐短小,却能阐述大道理,深具哲理,具有很高的文学价值,因此成为世界上流传广泛的经典作品。《伊索寓言》将下层平民和奴隶的思想彻底表现出来,从很多故事中,可以发现当时的社会问题,揭露古希腊社会的黑暗之面,也有很多故事是对古希腊人的生活经验和教训加以总结。著名的故事有《农夫和蛇》《狐狸和葡萄》《狼和小羊》《龟兔赛跑》《乌鸦喝水》等等。
