Jerome K. Jerome, a celebrated humorist, novelist and playwright, was well-known as “Mark Twain” of England. Born in Caldmore, Walsall, England, and brought up in poverty in London, he has suffered from the declining of his family owing to bad investments in the local mining industry. He wished to go into politics or be a man of letters, but the death of his father at age 13, and his mother at age 15, forced him to quit his studies and find work to support himself. He was once a worker in the railway, a journalist, a lawyer and so on. The variety of jobs provided him lavish social experience, which contributed to his writing.
