Three of the principal themes of the course will be national identity, linguistic identity, and the consequences of the two world wars. Although the course will consider some well-known historical figures, such as Hitler and de Gaulle, it will also examine the individual histories of ordinary people.

This course covers the emergence of modern France. Topics include the social, economic, and political transformation of France; the impact of France's revolutionary heritage, of industrialization, and of the dislocation wrought by two world wars; and the political response of the Left and the Right to changing French society.

讲师简介

约翰·梅里曼是耶鲁大学历史系教授，在密歇根大学专修法国和现代欧洲历史专业，并且获得密歇根大学博士学位。他的著作包括：《共和国的痛苦：镇压法国革命中的左派》，《文艺复兴以来的现代欧洲史》，《警察故事:法国的建立，1815-1851》。2000年，梅里曼教授获得了耶鲁大学伯恩斯·休厄尔教学奖。

John Merriman is a professor of History at Yale University. Specializing in French and modern European history, he received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. His publications include The Agony of the Republic: The Repression of the Left in Revolutionary France, A History of Modern Europe Since the Renaissance, and Police Stories: Making the French State, 1815-1851. In 2000, Professor Merriman was the recipient of the Yale University Byrnes-Sewall Teaching Prize.
