The book was written by HongMing Gu and was publiced in English in 1915.Compared with the Americans ,English Germans and French,Chinese have all necessary characteristics. The four characteristics of the Chinese character and the Chinese civilization are：depth,broadness,simplicity and delicacy.Below are some ideas of the book which have impressing influence on me.
For Europe,the use of physical force to maintain civil order leads to militarism.But militarim leads to war and war means destruction and waste.So to make militarism unnecessary and disappear,there must be an new and effective moral force-the Religion of good citizenship in the Chinese civilization.And if you can get all mankind to agree to recognize right and justice as a more effective force than physical force,then there will be no militarism in the world.
What is the real Chinaman? The indescribable something,which was defined as gentleness,softens and mitigates,makes foreigners like the Chinese.The gentleness is the product of sympathetic or true human intelligence-from the power of sympathy.So what is the secret of the power of sympathy of the Chinese people?The whole life of Chinaman is a life of feeling in the sence of emotion or human effection which comes from the heart or soul. But the wonderful peculiarity of the Chinese people is that while living a life of the heart, the life of a child, they yet have a power of mind and rationality.So the real Chinaman is a person with the head of a grown-up man and the heart of a child.And if the spirit of the Chinese people is a spirit of perpetual youth, the spirit of national immortality, the secret of this immortality is the happy union of soul with intellect.The one great fundamental difference between the Chinese civilization and that of modern Europe is that the Chinese don’t feel the need of religion.This is because we have in Confucianism asystem of philosophy and ethics.There are the divine duty of loyalty and a true idea of a state-a state religion in Confucianism which can give the mass of mankind the same sence of security and permance which religion gives.
There is a higher and nobler motive of duty than the base motives of intrest and of fear which should influence and inspire people in their conduct.In the fefedual age,the tie of kinship in a clan or family is the firm basis for the duty which the people in a state owe to the head of the state.While in Confucius era,the only basis is the law of the gentleman-the sence of honor and morality in politics.Besides,there is an undefined and unwritten code of the law of the gentleman before Confucius' time-li.,the law of propriety,good taste or good manners.
In conclusion,the book is mainly about Confucian thought and stresses the necessity of the Chinese literature and Chinaman.The purpose of this book is to publicize traditional Chinese culture to the west.For today's society,this book also can enhance Chinese national pride.Generally speaking,the book has taught me a good lesson.
