内容简介

此书是在作者身居刚刚成立的中华民国担任要职时于1904年写的一本并不是很厚的小书。作者在西方居留时久，英伦四年，美国八年。作者的英文造诣及对国际时事的谙熟在他所著的此书中可见一斑。因此此书的可读性很强。然而有趣的是，此书实际上是在以为美国女士的再三请求下，盛情难却，才写了他唯一的一本英文书稿。

This little book is written at the request of an American lady also the single one book for author to describe the America to normal persons from a sophisticatedlly diplomat such as the author. The author experiences many years of western life at that time,which dooms his writting work being worthwhile reading in a large range of population, young and old, man and woman,regardless of temporal limitations.

作者简介

伍廷芳（1842年～1922年），广东新会西墩人，清末民初杰出的政坛人物、外交家、法学家。本名叙，字文爵，号秩庸，后改名廷芳。1842年7月30日生于新加坡，后随父回国居广州。1874年自费留学英国，入伦敦学院攻读法学，获博士学位及大律师资格，成为中国近代第一个法学博士，后回香港任律师，成为香港立法局第一位华人议员。1882年进入李鸿章幕府，出任法律顾问，参与中法谈判、马关谈判等；1896年被清政府任命为驻美国、西班牙、秘鲁公使，签订近代中国第一个平等条约《中墨通商条约》。辛亥革命爆发后，任中华民国军政府外交总长，主持南北议和，达成迫清室退位。1917年赴广州参加护法运动，任护法军政府外交总长、财政总长、广东省长。1922年，陈炯明叛变时，因惊愤成疾，逝世于广州。

Wu Tingfang was a Chinese diplomat and politician who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and briefly as Acting Premier during the early years of the Republic of China.Wu is mentioned several times in the diaries of Sir Ernest Satow who was British Envoy in China, 1900-06. For example on 21 November 1903: "Wu Tingfang came in the afternoon, and stopped talking for an hour and a half about his commercial code and connected subjects. His idea is to draft also a new criminal code, and put both into force at the outset in the open ports."
