在中国数千年来未有的大变局中,在新旧政治交替的历史时期,伍廷芳表现得相当从容,从晚清重臣到民国外交总长,他都变现出从宽容的心态和沉稳的个性,无论是作为政治家、外交家还是作为知识分子,伍在历史上都独具一格,与历史同行,与时代共进。有不少中外史学家分别对伍廷芳从不同方面进行过研究。故称伍廷芳为“家喻户晓”的人物是一点也不过分的。然而,以往的研究,却都忽略了一个在一般人看来似乎不十分重要的问题,即伍廷芳与日本之关系。这实在是一个不应有的疏忽。
此书是在作者身居刚刚成立的中华民国担任要职时于1904年写的一本并不是很厚的小书。作者在西方居留时久,英伦四年,美国八年。作者的英文造诣及对国际时事的谙熟在他所著的此书中可见一斑。因此此书的可读性很强。然而有趣的是,此书实际上是在以为美国女士的再三请求下,盛情难却,才写了他唯一的一本英文书稿。
This little book is written at the request of an American lady also the single one book for author to describe the America to normal persons from a sophisticatedlly diplomat such as the author.
